The Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania seeks a Legal Director. The position is based in DRN’s Philadelphia office and requires periodic travel to DRN’s offices in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

DRN, Pennsylvania’s federally authorized protection and advocacy system, provides legal assistance and other advocacy services to persons with disabilities throughout Pennsylvania on a wide range of issues, including access to community services, employment discrimination, right to education, health care, housing, architectural barriers, abuse and neglect, benefits, and substituted decision-making. DRN identifies systemic issues that are important to people with disabilities and seeks change and reform through public education, litigation, and advocacy. DRN uses a range of strategies designed to benefit persons with disabilities, including impact litigation, individual case assistance, publications, coalition building, policy advocacy, and training and technical assistance. The Legal Director is a member of DRN’s senior management team and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The Legal Director is responsible for managing the work of DRN’s approximately 15 attorneys as well as all other aspects of DRN’s legal activities, including:

  • Hiring, supervising, developing, and evaluating DRN legal personnel, either directly or through managing attorneys;
     
  • Conducting and managing litigation and other legal advocacy activities, including intake services, either directly or through senior attorneys and Team Leaders;
     
  • Providing planning and strategic advice and information to the CEO and Board;
     
  • Establishing and maintaining all necessary policies and practices related to legal activities;
     
  • Participating in executive management discussions with and providing appropriate advice to the CEO and other senior agency personnel;
     
  • Participating in establishment of DRN priorities, goals, and objectives as well as substantive policy positions;
     
  • Representing DRN on task forces, commissions, work groups, etc. and before the general public and bar;
     
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with disability advocacy groups, leaders of the disability community, bar associations, and others working with DRN or on disability-related matters;
