The Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law (Shriver Center) is currently seeking a part-time staff attorney–legal editor for CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW: JOURNAL OF POVERTY LAW AND POLICY, now in its 44th year of continuous publication by the Shriver Center.

Position Title: Part-Time Staff Attorney–Legal Editor

Location of Job: The part-time staff attorney–legal editor may telecommute from anywhere in the United States or may work in the office of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law  in Chicago, Illinois.

Organizational Overview: The non-profit Shriver Center provides national leadership in efforts to increase justice and opportunity for low-income people by ensuring a humane safety net, a chance to prosper, and a voice and representation in public decisions that affect them. The Center engages in direct advocacy campaigns in Illinois and around the country to improve policies and programs on specific issues, and also engages in broader advocacy on matters of justice and opportunity.

Responsibilities: The Shriver Center seeks a part-time staff attorney–legal editor for CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW: JOURNAL OF POVERTY LAW AND POLICY, now in its 44th year of continuous publication by the Shriver Center.

These responsibilities describe the general nature of the work to be performed and should not be construed as an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties, and skills required:

  • Build community among CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW readers by stimulating discussion and information-sharing among advocates nationwide on our website, on our blog, through outside social media, and through conference calls with readers and advocates.
     
  • Use electronic media (e.g., webinars and other online discussion forums) to connect advocates for exchange of innovative legal strategies.
     
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and key developments in poverty law and policy, effective antipoverty strategies, and best practices.
     
  • Apply knowledge of trends and developments to editorial planning of CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW articles and entire REVIEW issues focused on selected themes. Develop innovative and cutting-edge topics. Solicit articles.
     
  • Edit articles for CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW in accordance with CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW editorial policy and style.
     
  • Write e-newsletter articles and blogs on themes raised in readers’ discussions, on relevant current events, and on CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW articles.
     
  • If based outside Chicago, represent the Shriver Center in the local advocacy community.
     
  • Assist in raising funds for the Shriver Center by, among other ways, working with the Shriver Center’s fund-raising staff to obtain funding for special-topic issues of CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW.
     
  • Attend periodic editorial meetings in Chicago.
     
  • Travel to one poverty law–related conference per year.
     
  • Participate as needed in various administrative committees of the Shriver Center. Supervise volunteers, law students, and support staff.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. and a minimum of five to six years of legal experience representing low-income people. Knowledge of substantive areas of law relevant to low-income people.
     
  • Excellent presentation skills, such as public-speaking and Microsoft PowerPoint.
     
  • Ability to work with authors, other contributors, and advocates generally by phone, e-mail, or in person.
     
  • Excellent writing and editing skills under deadline pressure and with sharp attention to detail.
     
  • Solid computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
     
  • Demonstrated experience in developing online content such as webinars, blogs, and podcasts.
     
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and project management experience.
     
  • Familiarity with CLEARINGHOUSE REVIEW and the national antipoverty advocacy community.
     
  • Willingness to take a short writing test as part of application and, after being hired, to have own work edited by others.

Salary and Benefits: This part-time position offers compensation commensurate with experience and time commitment and benefits.
